Fort de Giromagny

This French fort was built from 1875 to 1879 and was fully operational during the First World War. It was modernized in the period 1914-1915 and expanded with two underground shelters.

The fort fired on German tanks in June 1940 and was eventually captured by the German army on 18 June 1940. After its capture, the fort became the stage of a German propaganda movie about the Maginot line in 1941. Fort de Giromagny was modernized by the Germans during the occupation, but the entrance was eventually blown up by retreating German soldiers in 1944.

Fort de Giromagny is restored by a preservation association. Visits may be arranged upon request.
