War Memorial Middelharnis

The 'General War Memorial' in Middelharnis (municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee) is a memorial stone made of natural stone and brick.
Three coats of arms and the dates 1940 and 1945 were applied in relief.
The memorial stone is 1 meter 50 high, 3 meters wide and 1 meter deep.

The poem on the memorial stone reads:(freely translated)

"THE WAVE BREAKERS ENDES.THE TIDES TURNED.
THE PEACE PIGEON FINALLY FOUND 'HOLD FOR HER FOOT
AND BROUGHT IN CITY AND FIELD THE LONG DESIRED
OLIVE BRANCH FRESH FRAMED WITH A NEW ORANGE GLOW.


The history

The 'General War Memorial' reminds the residents of Middelharnis (municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee) of the struggle that took place during the Second World War and of the regained freedom and peace.

The monument was unveiled in 1953.
