National Memorial Danish Fallen 1914-1918

This memorial is dedicated to the 4140 Danes who fell in the First World War. Many of them served in the German army.

Although Denmark was neutral during the First World War, South Jutland from 1864 and the Second Schleswig War formed part of Germany. Most of the Danes commemorated are Schleswigers of Danish allegiance who were forced to serve in the German Army. Danish emigrants who fought against Germany are also included .

Following Germany's defeat at the end of the Great War ,the victorious Allies offered North and Central Schleswig a plebiscite in February 1920 and North Schleswig choose to reunify with Denmark.

The memorial is the centre piece of the Marselisborg Memorial Park.
