Manzanar National Historic Site

In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military style camps.

Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II.

The laborers had to work during their stay in agriculture in and outside the camp, mainly was producing natural rubber. The camp also had a camouflage net factory.

The camp was finally closed in November 1945. The buildings and structures at the camp were demolished or sold. Today, there are only a few foundations, two guard houses and the cemetery with a monument.

150 Japanese Americans died and cremated while interned at Manzanar, but only six are still buried in the cemetery, the others were removed after the war.
