Mausoleum Gabriele D'Annunzio

This mausoleum contains the tomb of the Italian writer and politician Gabriele D'Annunzio. He served in the Italian army during the First World War and participated in the 'Flight obove Vienna' in 1918, when the Italian Air Force dropped 50.000 pamflets above the Austrian capital. The airplane used during the raid can be seen in the museum of Gabriele D'Annunzio.

On 12 September 1919, Gabriele D'Annunzio and his soldiers occupied the city of Rijeka and established a regime: the Italian Regency of Carnaro. This regime is seen as the precursor of Italian fascism.
