Memorial Robbehomme Bridge

The main task of B Company, 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion during the first hours of D-Day was to blow the bridge at Robbehomme. The bulk of the battalion landed at 0050 hours on Dropzone V. With the assistance of the French guide they made their way to the bridge. On their way the party collected the some men of 8th and 9th Parachute Battalion. Together with men of the 3rd Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers they reached the bridge around 0300 hours. Due to the limited amount of explosives available, the Engineers only managed to weaken the structure. At about 0600 hours however five sappers arrived with more explosives and the bridge was duly destroyed.
