Stumbling Stones Markt 14

These memorial stones (so called Stolpersteine or stumbling blocks) commemorate:
* Ernst Joseph, born 1884, deported 1942, murdered in Auschwitz.
* Louise Joseph, née Reichardt, born 1883, deported 1942, murdered in Auschwitz.

Ernst and Louise Joseph had a shop at Markt 14 from 1919 until 1934. After years of anti-Semitism and finally a boycott of Jewish shops that began in 1933, they moved to Rotterdam the next year with their two children. Their son emigrated to Brazil in 1938. Ernst, Louise and daughter Grete were deported in 1942 from Rotterdam to Westerbork and from there to Auschwitz, where the parents were killed. Grete survived Auschwitz and a death march and left Europe to join her brother in Brazil.

The small brass plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were persecuted or murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities and villages, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
