German War Cemetery Wallendorf

This area was in the front line from September 1944 until February 1945. At the end of the war about 90-95 per cent of the houses and the farmsteads were destroyed and the many dead soldiers lying in the area had to be identified and their graves had to be registered.

Men from the town of Wallendorf had taken this task at that time and they marked each grave with a wooden cross. During the years 1950- 1951 all the deceased were re-buried at this spot. The "Volksbund" arranged the cemetery (Kriegsgräberstätte), placed a surrounding wall and set a sandstone cross. At the foot of the single graves small name stones are placed and on the grave fields sandstone crosses are standing in pairs, which remind of the old "Sühnekreuze".
