Gatchina Palace

This palace was damaged by aerial bombardment during the Second World War and was eventually captured by the German Army. The Germans looted the palace before retreating in 1944. A piece of wall with German graffiti is preserved and can be seen inside the palace these days. The graffiti reads:

"Here we were. We will never come back. Everything will be empty when Ivan comes."
