This Danish airbase was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1940.
Værløse Air Base is located northwest of Copenhagen and was an important military location in Denmark during World War II.
The base was opened in 1934 as the country's first real military airfield. It served as the headquarters for the Danish Air Force.
On 9 April 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Denmark during Operation Weserübung. Early in the morning, Værløse was attacked by German bombers. The aim was to destroy the Danish Air Force before it could take action. Many Danish aircraft were destroyed while still on the ground. The attack on Værløse was actually the only air battle during the German occupation of Denmark.
After the attack, the Germans took over the airfield. It remained in Wehrmacht hands during the occupation, but it was not used intensively for major operations.
After the war, Værløse became a Danish military base again, until it was officially closed in 2008. Today the area is partly open to the public and is used for recreation, nature and cultural activities.
