This 19th century old forification (1850-1854) is the largest 'Forwerk' of the Bundesfestung Ulm. It was modernised in 1880 and 1914. Ludwigsvorfeste became part of a Wehrmacht barracks complex in 1934 and was turned into a POW camp in 1945. One of the inmates was Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedictus XVI).
