The Kundasang War Memorial and Gardens

This memorial, which consists of several gardens, commemorates 2,428 POW's who died in the POW-camps Sandakan and Rabaul, or during the death marches.

Most prisoners of Sandakan were forced to three forced marches to Ranau, 240 kilometres west of Sandakan, between January and June 1945. On these marches approximately 500 prisoners died. The remainder died at Ranau or at the Sandakan camp. By the end of August 1945, all POW's were dead except for six Australian survivors who could escape during the death marches or from Ranau camp.

The plaques in this garden are dedicated to:

- The Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Indonesië-Maleisië Confrontatie, which lasted from 1962 to 1966.
- The 641 British prisoners of war who perished in the Kundasang POW camp.
- The soldiers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery who perished in the Kundasang camp in the period 1943-1945.
