Hashima Island

This small island, also known as Battleship Island, now dilapidated and a tourist attraction, was once the most densely populated area on earth because of the coal mines. In 1959, 5259 people lived here. In 1974, the mine was closed and all of the residents departed soon after.

In World War II, Korean forced laborers and Chinese prisoner of war were forced to work here under very harsh conditions and brutal treatment. It is estimated that that about 1,300 of them died.
