Memorial Stone Sluisweg 68

Lived here:

Roelfien van der Pool
born December 14, 1899 in Veendam
murdered January 25, 1943 in Auschwitz

Roelfien (Fientje) van der Pool was mentally handicapped. Every day she walked with her cart through the village of Veendam and then tried to get to the houses something that had some commercial value. Sometimes her mother accompanied her. Fientje celebrated her birthday several times a year. With a slice of biscuit tied to her arm, as was customary in the Peat Colonies, she passed by the doors hoping to find something to her taste. A piece of clothing was always popular: without any shame she adjusted it, without paying attention to curious looks from bystanders.
In the war years, Fientje helped with the soup kitchen in Veendam.
