Marcus Island (Minami-Tori-shima)

This island was defended by the 742-man Minami-Tori-shima Guard Unit, under the command of Rear Admiral Masata Matsubara and the 2,005 man 12th Independent Mixed Regiment of the Imperial Japanese Army, under the command of Colonel Yoshiichi Sakata. The island was bombed in the period 1942-2943 and eventually captured by the U.S. Army on 12 May 1945.
