Memorial Martyrs of Almagro

This memorial within the Dominican Church of Almagro commemorates the local clergymen who were murdered in Paracuellos del Jarama by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. They are considered martyrs of the Spanish Civil War and were beatified by the Pope.

Their names were Jose Delgado Perez, Jose Prieto Fuentes, Manuel Santiago and Francisco Fernandez Escosura

From 1936 to 1939, 6832 members of the Catholic clergy were excecuted without trial, sometimed after they were tortured, by Republicans because of their faith and monasteries and churches were destroyed. It is referred to as Spain's Red Terror, in which also tens of thousands of other people were murdered.
