Memorial Murdered Clergymen Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro

This memorial within the Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro (Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help) commemorates six local clergymen who were murdered by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. They are considered martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.

From 1936 to 1939, 6832 members of the Catholic clergy were excecuted without trial, sometimed after they were tortured, by Republicans because of their faith and monasteries and churches were destroyed. It is referred to as Spain's Red Terror, in which also tens of thousands of other people were murdered.
