Memorial Salvador de Madariaga y Rojo

This plaque commemorates Salvador de Madariaga y Rojo (1886-1978). From 1929 to 1931 and from 1940 to 1973, he lived in this house.
Salvador de Madariaga y Rojo was Professor of Spanish at Oxford University amd after that an ambassador and diplomat for Spain. In July 1936 he came to England to escape the Spanish civil war and from here he was a vocal opponent of and he organised resistance to, the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. Following the death of Franco he returned to Spain, in 1976.
