Medallions Plaza Mayor

On the builsing around the Plaza Mayor are medallions (portraits) of famous Spanish people in history, including General Francisco Franco and Miguel de Unamuno.

Julián Sánchez, "El Charro" (1774-1832), as much soldier as high-profile guerrillero during the Peninsular War (Guerra de la Independencia Española).
Alongside Arthur Wellesley (later Lord Wellington), he contributed to driving the napoleonic invasion troops out of the regions of Ciudad Rodrigo (where he is buried) and Salamanca. His contemporaries nicknamed him "El terror de los franceses".

The four sides of the Plaza Mayor display about 70 prominent figures of the Spanish History. Arthur Wellesley, commander-in-chief of the Anglo-Luso-Spanish army during the Peninsular War (Guerra de la Independencia Española), defeated the napoleonic troops at the Battle of Salamanca (Battle of Arapiles), south of Salamanca, on 22 July 1812.
