Second World War Memorial Forecourt

This memorial commemorates the residents of Melbourne who were killed or missing in the Second World War.

The Second World War Memorial Forecourt, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in front of 250,000 people on 28th Feb 1954, consists of the Cenotaph, the Eternal Flame and the Flagpoles. On top of the Cenotaph is a sculpture depicting 6 men in the uniforms of the Australian Navy, Army and Air Force, carrying a dead body of a comrade wrapped in an Australian Flag. The locations where Australian fought during WW2 are carved into the sides of the Cenotaph.
The Eternal Flame was lit at the same time the Cenotaph was unveiled in 1954 and forms the focus of ceremonies and is saluted during march pasts.
