HMAS Australia was a 8 x 8inch gun County class heavy cruiser with Battle honours of Atlantic (1940-41), Pacific (1941-43), Coral Sea (1942), Savo Island (1942), Guadalcanal, (1942), New Guinea (1942-1944), Leyte Gulf (1944) and Lingayen Gulf (1945). She participated in the unsuccessful Operation Menace to capture Dakar and was the first Allied ship to be hit in a Kamikaze attack where many of the casualties were sustained.
