Memorial Tennis Players of Canterbury

This memorial commemorates the tennis players of Canterbury who gave their lives in the First World War. One of them, Wilding, won four successive Wimbledon titles between 1910 and 1913 and remains New Zealand's most successful tennis player. On 9 May 1915 he was killed in the Battle of Aubers Ridge at Neuve Chapelle in northern France, while serving with British forces. He is buried in Rue-des-Berceaux military cemetery.
