At the crossing of the IJSSEL River on 11 april 45 Sgt BOND was acting as Coy Sergeant Major. Before the advance to HOVEN, under very heavy shell and mortar fire he took ammunition forward personally to the platoons, thus enabling the Company to consolidate its objective. He assisted in the organization of stretcher bearers to speed up evacuation, and on one occasion led a stretcher party across one hundred yards of open ground still covered but enemy machine gun fire to bring help to a badly wounded men of his Company. In this action and in the five days advance which followed, Sgt BOND executed that duties of Coy Sergeant Major with such skill and determination that, throughout the long period of hard fighting and rapid movement, the fighting efficiency of the Coy was kept to the highest standards."
