"Capt Burke was second in command of “A” Coy, Lake Sup R (Mot), during the fighting in Holland. On occasions when his Coy Commander was absent, he demonstrated a cool deliberation and capable leadership in commanding “A” Coy in action. On one occasion, during an exceedingly delicate operation, a daylight raid in coy strength across the MAAS River on 17 Jan 45, the Coy Commander was wounded during a tense phase in the action. Capt Burke immediately assumed command an through his clear-headed and cool exercise of control, constantly exposing himself to enemy fire in order to more effectively direct the battle, carried the operation through to a smooth and eminently successful conclusion. The example created by this officer’s complete disregard for his personal safety, and his demonstration of cool efficiency under enemy fire and trying circumstances, were responsible not only for the success of this operation, but for inspiring confidence and courage in all under his command in future actions in the Netherlands."
