"who, as helmsman of the MS "Ondina", which on 11 November 1942 in the Indian Ocean, although equipped with only one light-calibre gun, together with the accompanying minesweeper of the Royal British Indian Navy, engaged in battle against two overwhelmingly armed Japanese privateers, acted courageously under perilous circumstances and showed great devotion to duty in the fulfilment of his task, when several gunfire partially destroyed the bridge, killed the master, and shot away part of the steering wheel between his hands."
