Biography

16.05.1942: Feldwebel, Bordfunker, 3./ KG-2, KIA when Do 217E-4 Werknummer 5373 coded "U5 + BL" crashed into the North Sea, 30 km east of Lowestoft, shot down by Spitfires of 412th Squadron flown by P/O J.D.Stephenson and P/O R.A. Ellis in the area of Great Yarmouth, and crashed into the sea east of Southwold, Suffolk - remaining crew:
-Ofw Karl Fischer, Flugzeugführer, MIA
-Hptm Heinrich Schmidt-Hederich, Beobachter and Staka 3./ KG-2, KIA
-Ofw Georg Höhenrieder, Bordmechaniker, KIA
The three KIA washed ashore on the Dutch side and are buried at Ysselsteyn, Blk AR, Row 1: Höhenrieder Gr 138 and Schmidt-Hederich Gr 135. Hartmann buried Ysselsteyn, Blk CL, Row 1, Gr 24
