Gunner Geoffrey Francis Young
107th (The South Notts Husars) Medium Regt., Royal Artillery
He belonged to the regiment's 426th Battery. In the early morning hours of February 8, 1945, Operation Veritable began, the expulsion of German troops from the Kleve-Goch area and the Reichswald. The battery was positioned in the Meuse region to provide artillery support.
That morning, the American Air Force launched a raid on the wooded area with twin-engine bombers. One of the bombers was hit by flak and either jettisoned its bombs or lost them due to a mechanical malfunction.
The bombers landed near the emplaced guns and ammunition stores, which exploded. Two guns were destroyed, and of the gun crews, one was killed immediately and eight wounded. All were taken to the hospital in the General Hospital. the Bonskazerne in Grave, where one of the wounded eventually died. The deceased were buried in field graves in a meadow opposite the barracks. They were reburied on May 28, 1946, at the British War Cemetery in Uden.
