Flt. Lieut. (Pilot) Herbert Philipson Atkinson
405 (RCAF) Sqdn R.A.F.
Pilot of the Halifax bomber DT741 LQ-P which, on the night of May 1, 1943, at 3:21 a.m., on the way back from a bombing raid on the Krupp factories in Essen, Germany, crashed on the north bank of the Waal River, near the PGEM power plant in Lent (Elst).
He was shot down by Oberlt. Geiger of the German air base in Venlo.
Two of the eight crew members were killed.
Buried on May 3, 1943, in the rectory garden next to the Roman Catholic St. Peter's Church in Uden. He was identified by a POW.
Reburied on July 10, 1946, in the British War Cemetery in Uden.
