Biography

Sgt. (Air Gunner) John Beattie
RAF (VR) 99 Sqdn.
Air gunner of Wellington bomber P9281 LN-M. On the return flight from a bombing mission to Düsseldorf (Germany), he was shot down by a night fighter of I./NJG 1 from the German air base in Venlo and crashed on the Schaykseheid/Zevenbergschehuis between Schayk and Heesch. Four of the six crew members were killed.

Three of them were buried as unknowns on June 15, 1941, in the unconsecrated section of the Roman Catholic St. Peter's Church cemetery in Uden. The fourth (J.A.S. Reid) was also buried there on July 23, 1941.
These three were the first Allied airmen buried in Uden. They were identified by name in December 1941 and now rest in a collective grave.
Reburied in the British War Cemetery Uden on June 21, 1946. See also J. A. Barron, A.E. Gibbon, and J.A.S. Reid.
