Biography

Pilot Officer Gordon Birlison
Wireless Operator RAF (VR), nr. 48 Sqdn RAF
He was a member of the crew of Dakota KG597, which was shot down by German fighters over the town of Zeeland on its way back from a supply flight to Arnhem. Two crew members (P/O G. Birlison and Airdespatcher L. Corps J. Pilson) were shot at by German fighters while parachuting and were so severely wounded that they died shortly afterwards.
They were buried in field graves opposite the General De Bons barracks in Grave and transferred to the British War Cemetery in Uden in the summer of 1946.
Among them perished:
Flt. Sgt. D.H.R. Plear, Pilot RAF
Pilot Officer D.A. Webb, Pilot RCAF
Both were buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery in Zeeland.
