Biography

Flying Officer Charles Herbert Cressman
Pilot RCAF No. 437 Sqdn RCAF
He was the pilot of Dakota KG489. On September 21, 1944, while returning from a supply flight to Arnhem/Oosterbeek, it was shot down by German fighter planes and crashed at approximately 6:15 PM on the Everse Akkerpad near Eerschot in Sint-Oedenrode.
The entire crew, as well as four air dispatchers, were killed.
He was temporarily buried in a field grave near the wreckage of the aircraft. He was transferred to the British War Cemetery in Uden in September 1946. There he was reburied as an unknown. His headstone read: "An Airman of the 1939-1945 War. Royal Air Force. Known unto God." In the autumn of 1996 he was finally identified and a new gravestone was placed on 24-8-1998.
