Flt. Sgt. Alain Hubert Edmond Marie de Blommaert De Soye
Pilot RAF (VR) No. 609 Sqdn. RAF
Departing from Kluis airfield near Malden, he collided with his colleague, M.H.G. Rendall, over Grave in his Typhoon fighter RB250 PR-A. Both aircraft crashed; the Blommaert De Soye in the floodplains of the Meuse River near Overassel, and both pilots were killed.
Blommaert De Soye was provisionally buried in a field grave on the grounds opposite the General de Bons barracks in Grave.
He was reburied on May 27, 1946, at the British War Cemetery in Uden.
He was a descendant of a noble family from Rixensart (Belgium) and was born on November 3, 1920. After fleeing his country at the end of 1941, the nobleman reached Great Britain on March 15, 1942, following a long journey via France and Spain. There, he joined the RAF and became a fighter pilot. He obtained British citizenship. His gravestone in the British War Cemetery in Uden is therefore in the traditional design of the CWGC.
The wreck of the Typhoon was finally recovered in 2004.
