Biography

Flt. Sgt. Herbert Peace Gray
Air Observer/Bomb Aimer, No. 460 Sqdn. RAAF
He was a member of the crew of Lancaster bomber W4274 UV-B. It was shot down by a German night fighter on the evening of January 4, 1943, and crashed on 'Dukenburg', southwest of the bridge over the Maas-Waal Canal in Hatert. All members of the seven-man crew were killed. The target of the mission was Essen, Germany.
He is buried in the rectory garden next to the Roman Catholic St. Peter's Church in Uden.

The crew, all RAAF, consisted of:
Flt. Sgt. H.G. Brooks, pilot RAAF
Flt. Sgt. H.P. Gray, Air Observer/Air Bomber RAAF
Flt. Sgt. F.E. Hutchinson, Air Observer/Navigator RAAF
Sgt. J.H. Watson, Flight Engineer RAAF
Flt. Sgt. E.J.B. Fletcher, Air Gunner RAAF
Sgt. K.J.H. Harris, Air Gunner RAAF
Flt. Sgt. R.T. Lonsdale, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner RAAF

On 7 January 1943, Fletcher, Harris, Hutchinson, and Harris were buried, with only Harris being identified. The others were identified in January and April 1946.
He was reburied in September 1946 at Uden War Cemetery.
