He was the radio operator/air gunner on the Wellington bomber P9281 LN-M. On its return from a bombing mission to Düsseldorf, it was shot down by Uffz. Macke of I. NJG 1 from the German air base in Venlo. The aircraft crashed on the Schaijkseheide/Zevenbergschehuis, between Schaijk and Heesch. Four of the six crew members were killed.
Three of them were buried as unknown soldiers on 15 June 1941 in the unconsecrated part of the cemetery of the Roman Catholic St. Petrus Church in Uden. They were the first three Allied airmen to be buried in Uden.
They were identified in 1941 and now rest in a joint grave.
They were reburied on 21 June 1946 at the British War Cemetery in Uden.
