Biography

Sgt. John Maxwell Iliff
Navigator / Bomber RAF (VR), No. 51 Squadron RAF
He was navigator/bomb aimer of the Handley Page Halifax B. Mk. II DT705 MH-S that crashed on 27 January 1943 at 20:15 on Vorleweg in Mill. The bomber was shot down on its way to the target in Düsseldorf by a night fighter from I. NJG 1 of the German air base in Venlo.
The following were killed with him:
Flt. Sgt. F.H. Barret, Pilot RCAF
Sgt. J.H. Brooks, Air Gunner RAF
Sgt. C.M. Page, Observer RAF
The four were buried on 29 January 1943 in the rectory garden of the Roman Catholic St. Petrus Church in Uden; J.H. Brooks and C.M. Page as unknowns (identified in July 1946).
In September 1946, he was reburied at the British War Cemetery in Uden.
Survivors: P/O G.F. Farmer, Sgt. J.D. Hardle and Sgt. G.J.E. Hextell.
