Biography

L. Sjt. Thomas Newman
44th Royal Tank Regt. RAC
Killed on 25-9-1944, around 13:00, during Operation 'Market Garden' near Logtenburg, a wooded area along the Veghel - Sint-Oedenrode road, in Veghel, as commander of a Sherman tank.
While the Sherman was supporting American paratroopers, it was immediately attacked by a heavy German tank upon leaving the woods and destroyed; three crew members were killed. They were buried in a field in a meadow near the municipal woods at Logtenburg-Koevering in Veghel.
Reburied at the British War Cemetery Uden on 11-7-1946.
The following died with him: P.C. Hollis and F.H. Huggins.
