Biography

Alfred John Burns, Flight Sergeant, air gunner, RAAF, 77 Squadron RAF. Son of Arthur James Burns and Emily Adelaide Burns from Lidcombe, New South Wales, Australia. Initially enlisted in the army, but transferred to the RAAF in September 1944.

He was killed on 17 June 1944 when Halifax Mk III MZ 715 was shot down near Ochten, the Netherlands, during a mission to Sterkrade. Of the six other crew members, only one survived the crash; four are buried at the War Cemetery in Uden, and Alfred Burns and Patrick Tierman, who were found later, are buried in the cemetery in Dodewaard. His gravestone bears the inscription: HIS DUTY FEARLESSLY AND NOBLY DONE. EVER REMEMBERED R.I.P.
