Biography

Robert Jack Henderson, born on 17 June 1920 in Tarbrax, Lanarkshire, was the son of John and Catherine Henderson. After attending West Calder High School, he worked briefly as a miner before joining the RAFVR in 1937, initially serving in ground crew. Following two periods with 207 Squadron, he trained as a flight engineer at No 4 School of Technical Training and was posted to 57 Squadron at Scampton in October 1942. Between November 1942 and March 1943, Henderson flew 16 operations.

Henderson volunteered to join David Shannon’s crew for the Dams Raid. After the raid, Henderson continued flying with Shannon for another year, completing 19 more missions, and later flew six additional operations with Flt Lt Kearns. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) and commissioned before transferring to a training unit in mid-1944.

Married to Doreen Bluett in 1943, he had one child.

Rejoining the RAF in 1948, Henderson served at various stations in the UK, Rhodesia, Malta, and Cyprus. He passed away in Limassol, Cyprus, on 18 February 1961 while serving at RAF Akrotiri.
