Biography

Jack Marriott, born on 19 January 1920 in New Smithy, Derbyshire, attended Chinley's village school. Before the war, he worked in a local bleach factory. At the war's onset, he joined the RAF as ground crew.

Eager to advance, Marriott retrained as a heavy bomber flight engineer and joined 50 Squadron at Skellingthorpe on 25 August 1942. He completed 26 operations before posting to 617 Squadron on 25 March 1943.

Upon leaving 50 Squadron, his CO recommended him for a Distinguished Flying Medal, praising his efficiency and determination. The award was confirmed posthumously in July 1943 and reported locally. Marriott is interred in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
