Biography

In 1943 he joined the RAFVR and was commissioned as a navigator on 10 May. He was recruited into Number 140 Squadron which was a specialised photographic-reconnaissance unit. On 6 November 1944 he was on a mission over Germany in an unarmed Mosquito which was intercepted by German fighters. The fighters attacked and Derrick Copperwaite was killed. His pilot, Wing Commander Frederic Dobell was unharmed and managed to make an emergency landing at Volkel airbase in the Netherlands.
