Biography

Gefreiter Dietrich acting as a Bordfunker (Wireless Operator) with Staffel 8 of Kampfgeschwader 76 died when his Ju88A-5 (wn:5168; F1+BS) was shot down during a bombing mission targeting Birmingham. The aircraft crashed near Scampton aerodrome, at Brattleby Lane. The entire crew—Pilot Leutnant Kurt Hanning, Observer Gefreiter Helmut Wimmeder, and Air Gunner Unteroffizier Wilhelm August Christian Hansen—were also killed, along with Gefreiter EH Reidel, an unauthorized ground crew member on board.
