Biography

Leutnant Hanning, flying with Staffel 8 of Kampfgeschwader 76, was killed when his Ju88A-5 (wn:5168; F1+BS) was shot down during a bombing raid on Birmingham. The aircraft crashed near Scampton airfield, Brattleby Lane. The entire crew – radio operator Gefreiter Dietrich, observer Gefreiter Helmut Wimmeder and air gunner NCO Wilhelm August Christian Hansen – were also killed, along with Gefreiter E.H. Reidel, an unqualified member of the ground crew on board.
