Known in some records as EH Riedel, he was a ground crew member of Staffel 8, Kampfgeschwader 76, who unofficially boarded a Ju88A-5 (wn:5168; F1+BS) during a mission targeting Birmingham. The aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed at Brattleby Lane near Scampton aerodrome. All aboard were killed, including Pilot Leutnant Kurt Hanning, Observer Gefreiter Helmut Wimmeder, Air Gunner Unteroffizier Wilhelm August Christian Hansen, and Wireless Operator Gefreiter Johannes Dietrich.
