Van Deventer worked for the province of Utrecht as a civil servant. During World War II, he was involved in the resistance and as a result of his resistance activities, he was arrested in 1941. He was first held in the Buchenwald concentration camp and was later transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He died there on December 1, 1942.
