Biography

Marine 2nd class, Marine Brigade

Jacobus was born on 10 February 1928 in Princenhage. He enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Navy and was trained as a marine. Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence during the Indonesian struggle for independence, Jacobus was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority.
On 20 September 1949, Jacobus died in unknown circumstances in Kuntji, Java. At that time, a formal ceasefire had already been declared, but it was regularly violated by shelling and ambushes. Jacobus may have been killed in one of these battles, but an accident or illness cannot be ruled out. Jacobus was 21 years old and found his final resting place at the Dutch military cemetery Kembang Kuning in Surabaya. His name is commemorated in the Piƫtakapel chapel in the parish of Effen, near Princenhage.
