Biography

SM. 2-2 MuOD

Jan was born on 20 June 1921 in the municipality of Ginneken en Bavel, the son of Johannes Feskens and Florentina van Roosmalen. He lived in Hengelo, where his wife Janna Levers came from. Their daughter was also born there. In the autumn of 1946, he enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Army in Eefde near Zutphen and was assigned to the 17th Transport Troops (AAT), responsible for the logistics of the armed forces. He eventually rose to the rank of sergeant major.
Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence in the Indonesian struggle for independence, Jan was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority. At the end of April 1947, he left for the East on the Boissevain, landing a month later in the port of Tandjong Priok near Batavia.
After a period of acclimatisation, Jan was transferred to Meester Cornelis, where the real work could begin. In addition to military transports, the company also provided transport for the rubber company NIRUB during this period. During the First Police Action from 21 July to 4 August 1947, the company occupied Magerai station in Meester Cornelis due to observed activity by revolutionary fighters. The company then resumed its normal work in Semarang, providing transport to Salatiga, Pekalongan and Cheribon.
During the Second Police Action from 19 December 1948 to 5 January 1949, the battalion was divided into two groups: the northern group advanced to Demak and Blora, while the southern group was sent to Djokjakarta. Jan then advanced with the southern group to the republican capital.
On 6 January 1949, one day after the end of the Action, Jan was killed at the Magoewo airbase near Djokjakarta. He may have been killed in action or succumbed to injuries sustained earlier during the Action. He was 27 years old and was laid to rest at the Dutch military cemetery Candi in Semarang.
