Biography

Dpl.Sld.5-3-10 RI

Wouterus was born on 23 August 1925 in Teteringen. As a conscript, he joined the Royal Netherlands Army in Vught in September 1946 and was assigned to the 3-10 Infantry Regiment. After less than a month of training, he was sent to the Dutch East Indies as part of the 7 December Division to complete his military service. As part of the Dutch armed forces, he was sent there to restore peace and Dutch authority after Indonesian independence was declared. On 1 October 1946, he left for the East on the Sloterdijk and arrived in Batavia after a sea voyage of just under a month.

Wouterus had only received brief training and his battalion was lightly armed. Nevertheless, they were deployed as a fully-fledged infantry unit, mainly to guard the palace of Lieutenant Governor-General Huib van Mook, the residence of Army Commander S.H. Spoor, Struiswijk prison and the Senen petrol distribution centre. The battalion is also deployed to escort Japanese prisoners of war.

After the battalion is transferred to Tangerang in Banten, in the far west of Java, in March 1947, Wouterus is deployed there from June onwards in military cleansing operations. Wouterus was killed in action on 4 July 1947 during one of these operations near Tangerang. He was 21 years old and was laid to rest at the Dutch military cemetery Menteng Pulo in Jakarta.
