Sold. 2-2 Mitr. Bat. 2e Div.
Johannes was born on 13 January 1926 in Breda and lived in The Hague. As a conscript, he joined the Royal Netherlands Army in Venlo in the spring of 1947, where he was assigned to the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion. Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence in the Indonesian struggle for independence, Johannes was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority. After several months of training, he left for the East on 30 July on the Volendam, arriving in Batavia after a month at sea. En route, the battalion was plagued by an outbreak of “benign typhus”, which meant that 77 sick men had to be taken to hospital on arrival and remain in quarantine for two weeks.
Johannes and his unit were initially stationed in Buitenzorg and assigned to guard duty. In November 1947, the battalion was sent to East Java, where they patrolled and secured various posts. Marius, assigned to the mortar company, was stationed with his unit in Kraksaän on the coast.
In April 1948, they were transferred to Surabaya. During the Second Police Action, which began on 19 December 1948, Johannes was assigned to the Marine Brigade on the western front of East Java, where they encountered fierce resistance from the revolutionary army.
Due to the heavy artillery used by the mortar company and the machine gun battalions in the fighting, they became a particular target for enemy fire.
On 24 December 1948, Johannes was killed in Surabaya after being fatally wounded during military operations. He was 22 years old and was laid to rest at the Dutch military cemetery Kembang Kuning in Surabaya.
