Biography

Elt.Vlg.1 ARVA LSK.

Bernard was born on 30 June 1913 in Breda and lived in Maastricht. When the Dutch defences collapsed under the German invasion, Bernard decided to flee to the United Kingdom to continue the fight against the German occupiers on the side of the Allies. As a sergeant, he was seconded to the British Royal Air Force (RAF), along with the rest of the remaining Dutch air force personnel.

After the war, Bernard, now promoted to first lieutenant, was assigned to the Artillery Reconnaissance Unit (ARVA) of the Royal Netherlands Army Air Force. As a technical officer, he served in the Dutch East Indies at Tjililitan Air Base near Batavia, where Auster aircraft that had arrived in dismantled condition were assembled.

On 3 February 1947, the first of these assembled aircraft was delivered and Bernard took it on a test flight together with pilot Catharinus Marius van der Schatte Olivier. In full view of the entire squadron personnel, the aircraft crashed at the edge of the airfield. Both occupants did not survive the crash; Bernard was 33 years old.
