Kap. 4-3-2 R.I.
Arnold was born on 8 May 1916 in The Hague and lived in Breda. As a conscript, he joined the Royal Netherlands Army in Nijmegen in September 1946 and was assigned to the 3-2 Infantry Regiment. After a short military training, he left for the Dutch East Indies on 18 October 1946 with the Indrapoera, as part of the 7 December Division. He attained the rank of captain.
Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence in the Indonesian struggle for independence, he was sent to the East to restore peace and Dutch authority in fulfilment of his military service. After a month at sea, Arnold landed in Batavia, where he was assigned to guard duty and minor purges in the surrounding area. In the early spring of 1947, Arnold's unit was tasked with guarding the port of Tandjong Priok; from the beginning of March, they were responsible for securing the Buitenzorg-Bandoeng convoy route.
Arnold saw action during the First Police Action in the vicinity of Soekaboemi and Cheribon; he was then stationed with the battalion in Tasikmalaja, from where various permanent and temporary posts were manned and various actions were carried out against the revolutionaries.
After the Renville Agreement of January 1948, calm returned somewhat, but Islamic fighters from Daroel Islam continued the fight against the Dutch troops on their own. At the end of 1948, the fighting with the Indonesian revolutionaries flared up again. Arnold was killed on 16 January 1949, while on patrol in Soekarama between Soekaboemi and Bandoeng, when the battalion was again involved in the purges following the Second Police Action. Arnold was 32 years old and found his final resting place at the Dutch military cemetery Menteng Pulo in Jakarta.
